Low Inventory, Population Growth Driving Up Harris County Property Values

Harris County's Appraisal District is predicting a 20-percent jump in property values this year.

Chief appraiser Roland Altinger says he's never seen values rise so quickly in his 40 years of real estate, and there's no end in sight.

"The large influx of population in our community. The limited supply of properties. The low interest rates we've enjoyed over the last few years. The ability to locate away from the central business district due to remote work," Altinger says all play a role in rising values.

The good news is homestead exemptions are capped at 10-percent.

"So the tax assessors must compute tax on an amount that is actually less than the market value, representing tax savings for those accounts."

Altinger urges all others to file a protest online.

"Both informal settlement conferences and ARB hearings can be conducted by Webex or in-person," he says.

You have until May 15 to protest your property value.
