9-year-old fatally shot during domestic disturbance

Houston police are investigating after a 9-year-old girl was killed and her mother was wounded in the Heights last night, allegedly by the woman’s ex-boyfriend.

The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. in a third-floor apartment at Camden Heights just off Oxford Street.

The alleged shooter has been identified as Jeremiah Jones, 22. The woman had a gunshot wound to the shoulder, and the little girl was shot in the head.

Investigators say the woman and two other female children, ages 7 and 1, were in the apartment at the time of the shootings.

Police said the woman was living with a male cousin who was downstairs talking with a friend when Jones arrived at the apartment. The woman and Jones had dated for eight months, police say, but their relationship ended two months ago.

The three girls were in a bedroom watching TV when the suspect came in, upset that the woman had been talking with other men since their break-up, according to police.

The suspect ripped the TV off the wall and left the bedroom for the living room, followed by the woman. As they continued to argue, the suspect returned to the bedroom and fired two shots, police said. He then shot the mother in the shoulder and left in his car, according to investigators.

The 9-year-old’s sisters were not injured and are now with a family member.

Police say the suspect was out on bond on a charge of felon in possession of a firearm.
