Gov. Abbott Orders National Guard to Assist with Record Number of Illegals

Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday ordered the Texas National Guard to assist the Texas Department of Public Safety in making arrests related to the border crisis.

Border agents are on pace to hit two million encounters this fiscal year, which runs through September.

The Senate Homeland Security Committee's Rob Portman grilled the top DHS official on Tuesday about the record number of illegals crossing the southern border.

“The border is facing the worst migrant crisis that we've had in over two decades. It's obviously proven that we need a new approach. What we're doing now isn't working,” he told DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

But there are signs the Biden white house is finally acknowledging the crisis. said DHS is resuming expedited removal of certain family units not eligible under the Title 42 public health order.

“I think President Biden and his czar Kamala Harris is beginning to realize the American people are starting to pay attention,” Texas Congressman Troy Nehls told Fox News. “We have a crisis at the southern border and this could all be resolved. It's real simple. Revert back to Trump's policies.”

At the same time, Mayorkas is asking Congress for another $345 million for U.S. citizenship and immigration services.

“To reduce the backlog of applications and petitions, ramp up interview capacity and meet our goal of welcoming up to 125,000 refugees per year,” he said.
