Year-Long Gun/Ammo Shortage Impacting Police Departments

There doesn't appear to be any end in sight to the widespread shortages of firearms and ammunition across the country.

Even after one year, gun store owners still say it's hard to fulfill their orders in a timely fashion. 2020's run on guns, fueled by the pandemic and civil unrest led to the supply and demand issues. Ed Arrighi, Co-owner and CEO of American Shooting Centers in Houston, says those problems have stretched into 2021.

“We’ve had a lot of people ask, ‘Is government hoarding all the ammo?’ The answer to that is ‘no’. All the ammunition manufacturers are basically building 24/7 right now. So, the whole supply chain is incredibly busy,” Arrighi said.

The shortage is now impacting police departments, especially in smaller cities. While it has yet to impact police on patrol, it has some departments concerned there will be a lack of ammo for training.
