Texas Lawmakers Propose Revamping Rules for Toll Roads

There is a debate brewing in the Texas legislature over whether or not to expand our state's toll roads.

In all likelihood, Toll roads in Texas are not going away. However, one Republican-backed proposal would require paying off current projects, and capping fees on late charges.

“Now more than ever, we need to decriminalize and make these toll fees much more reasonable and give people the ability to pay them off. That’s not what we have today,” Terri Hall, Founder of Texans for Toll-free Highways, said.

Hall believe officials shouldn't impound your car, for example, if you haven't paid your fees.

“If you want a person to pay up for their toll bills, you don’t take away their way to get to work to actually earn the money they need to pay off that bill,” Hall explained.

However, getting similar bills passed will likely be an uphill battle. A contrasting proposal during this current session would regulate the addition of more toll roads.
