A committee recommended keeping the name after a community survey indicated an overwhelming majority of respondents didn't want the name altered.

The decision was announced during a virtual board meeting Tuesday night.

Last year, many Texas school districts considered changing school names associated with the Confederacy and segregation. A statement from District Superintendent Dr. Randal O'Brien said, "I humbly ask Goose Creek CISD community to continue to put your trust in an administration that has worked very hard to ensure a fair and objective process free from outside influence and political pressure."

The school, which opened in 1928, has a current student enrollment of about 1,700.
