Progressives in Congress have launched a political action committee to oust two Democrats who oppose ending the legislative filibuster.
The No Excuses PAC is specifically targeting West Virginia's Joe Manchin and Arizona's Kyrsten Sinema. But Matthew Wilson, political science professor at Southern Methodist University, says Manchin holds all the cards.
“Progressives in the Democratic Party are really overplaying their hand here because they essentially have no leverage on Joe Manchin,” he says. “There is exactly one Democrat that has any chance at winning a senate race in West Virginia, and that Democrat is Joe Manchin.”
Wilson points out that President Biden had been considered a moderate during his time in the Senate.
“If Biden wants to hold the line on more moderate policies, he can count on these couple of Democratic allies in the Senate to block these progressive efforts.”
This is would most certainly draw backlash from New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and “The Squad.”
“AOC has the platform to be very loud and she has a devoted following and attracts a lot of media attention,” says Wilson. “I wouldn't go so far as to say she's running the show, but her voice is going to be out there on every policy issue that is considered.”
