Texas High School Suspends Male Student For Wearing Nail Polish To Class

A Texas high school is taking heat after suspending a male student for wearing nail polish. 17-year-old Trevor Wilkinson returned to class at Clyde High School after Thanksgiving with his nails painted black and highlighted with colored accents along the top.

School officials informed Wilkinson that it was against the dress code for male students to wear nail polish or facial makeup. They gave him an in-school suspension and told him that he cannot return to class until he removes the nail polish.

Wilkinson called the punishment "unjust and not okay" in a change.org petition that demands the school district update its dress code.

"It's a complete double standard because girls are allowed to paint and get their nails done. Not only that, but freedom of expression is validation enough that the dress code and policy is not okay," the openly gay teenager wrote.

As of Saturday (December 5), the petition had over 41,000 signatures towards its goal of 50,000.

The school district issued a statement but refused to comment specifically about Wilkinson's punishment.

"The District conducts a diligent and thoughtful review of the dress code on an annual basis. That review process results in the development of a final dress code that is consistently implemented and enforced during the next school year," the statement said. "Parents and students are provided a copy of the dress code prior to the start of each new school year. Questions or concerns with the dress code are reviewed individually, and the District cannot share any information regarding a specific student."

Wilkinson said he has no intention of removing the nail polish and will continue to serve his in-school suspension.
