"Eyes of Texas" to Remain UT Fight Song

A newly appointed committee has been tasked with examining the racist history of the school song and making recommendations about how to reconcile that past with the role the song plays in the campus culture now.

The song was written in 1903 and based on “I’ve Been Working On The Railroad”, which also has racist overtones.

In the wake of Black Lives Matters protests this Summer, athletes and students were calling for UT to do away with the song because of its ties to the confederacy.

UT leaders pledged to keep the song but “own, acknowledge and teach about all aspects of the origins” of the song while continuing to sing it at campus and sporting events.
