Houston City Council Designates 'Indigenous Peoples Day'

The second Monday in October is now "Indigenous Peoples Day" in Houston.

City Council voted 14-to-2 in support of the measure at their meeting on Wednesday.

The designation doesn't make the day a city holiday, but puts it on the same day as the federal Columbus Day holiday.

Mayor Sylvester Turner says the resolution gives Houston residents a choice as to how to observe the day.
