Stolen iPhones Warn Looters They Are Being Tracked

Apple stores were a popular target for looters who were looking to make off with the latest iPhone during protests against the killing of George Floyd. The looters were in for a surprise when they got home and tried to turn on the stolen phones - Apple was tracking them.

Images have been circulating on social media and Reddit showing a message asking the thief to return the phone and warning them that local authorities will be contacted.

“Please return to Apple Walnut Street. This device has been disabled and is being tracked. Local authorities will be alerted,” the alert said.

Users reported that the phones could not be turned off and would only shut down once the battery was drained.

Apple refused to comment on its security procedures. It is unclear if the same thing happened with laptops and other items taken from the stores.
