Americans Cautious About “Expert Opinions” on the Science of COVID-19

Follow the science. That's phrase we've been hearing over and over again from lawmakers in Washington. But what does that mean? We're months into the pandemic, and there's still so much medical doctors and scientists still don't know about the coronavirus.

Americans had received mixed messages. Even White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci weeks before the March shutdown said “the risk in the United States is still low."

So what are Americans supposed to be doing? The World Health Organization said early on that wearing face masks wouldn’t be a big help, but now most doctors say it's a good idea. “Expert guidelines” have even been parodied on social media.

Some say the pandemic is exposing the limits of science. Others say, as with all new phenomenon, science is simply the process of understanding.
