Houston Police Fatally Shoot Gun-Toting Man

Houston Police shot and killed a 38-year-old man who confronted them with a gun early Memorial Day. Officers responded around 1:30 a.m. Monday to the area of Capridge and Fayridge Drives in southeast Houston, where an intoxicated and emotional man was reported with a gun. Police say the man ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon, then fired it into the ground several times before pointing it at officers. Officers opened fire, shooting and killing the man. Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Troy Finner says officers spoke with the man's family members at the scene. "His mother, his wife and some other relatives...very painful for them...they're shaken," Finner told reporters.

Finner noted that the situation is a tragedy for all involved. "I'm just going to ask that we pray for this family, pray for the suspect--they've got to get through this. But also, all officers...I can tell you each officer out here tonight...they’re very upset, very emotional. Nobody wants to shoot anybody.”

This is HPD's sixth officer-involved shooting in the last month.
