One Police Officer Dies, Another Injured in Helicopter Crash

A Houston police officer is dead after the helicopter he was riding in crashed into a Greenspoint apartment complex at around two this morning, and the officer piloting the aircraft is in critical condition at Hermann Memorial Hospital. Police Chief Art Acavedo says the helicopter was responding to a report of two bodies in Greenspoint Bayou when it began spinning out of control and went down in the 17000 block of Imperial Valley near Benmar, crashing into the unoccupied clubhouse of the Biscayne At Cityview Apartments. No residents in the complex were injured. The pilot and officer were trapped in the wreckage as crews worked to extricate them. The officers were Life-Flighted to the hospital where one officer died. The injured officer is in critical condition. At a pre-dawn press conference from the Texas Medical Center, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said, “I ask for the city of Houston to continue to lift up both families, especially lift up the family of the police officer that has died... At the same time, lift up the entire HPD family." The police chief said there will be an extensive investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
