The jails in Bexar County Texas have released "non-violent criminals" in an effort to decrease the spread of the COVID19 disease.
Similar action has already been taken in places like Ohio, Washington, and California.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s office announced Wednesday that it will begin releasing “non-violent” offenders in its jail to reduce the possibility of coronavirus spreading.
This comes after an inmate showed flu-like symptoms and was tested for coronavirus.
News4SanAntonio reported the sheriff’s department is currently in the process of deciding who will be released.
The adult detention center in Bexar County has a capacity of 2,830 with a 1,733-person annex facility. Jail administration employees did not have a count on how many are in due to felonies and how many for misdemeanors.
According to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), Bexar County currently has 4 of the 83 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Texas, not including those treated at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
