Consumers may be the key to Trump's re-election in 2020

The old line from the 1992 election was, "It's the economy, stupid." That may be true. But, it may be more about consumers.

To be specific, it's about how consumers are feeling. Chuck DeVore with the Texas Public Policy Foundation says it's all about making sure consumers are in a good frame of mind when they go to vote.

"When consumers are happy it goes very well for the politicians in power," DeVore explained. "It's looking very good for President Trump right now."

Right now consumers are happy. The University of Michigan's Index of Consumer Sentiment was at 96.0. A reading that high means the economy is expanding.

"Expectation has never been higher in this index's history. Everybody thinks they are going to be doing better next year," DeVore said.

But, DeVore says the President should talk more about the booming economy to get people excited, and less about impeachment. That would keep the economy at the forefront of their minds, as opposed to the inquiry that's going on right now.
