Houston firefighters deliver another blow to Mayor Sylvester Turner. The Retired Firefighters Association is endorsing challenger Dwight Boykins in the mayoral race, citing reduced pension benefits under Mayor Turner.
“Many of our retirees are losing tens of thousands of dollars every year because of the pension reforms brought forth by Sylvester Turner,” says Steve Williams, HRFA board member.
“Our beneficiaries are widows and dependents,” he told the media Wednesday. “We acknowledge and passionately recognize that these pension reforms brought to us by Sylvester Turner have had a great impact.”
Boykins also has the support of active firefighters, having fought to protect their jobs during the months-long battle with Mayor Turner over Prop B pay raises, which eventually were overturned by a judge.
