School Board Considers Removing George Washington Mural

According to the Daily Signal, the war on history is coming for George Washington. The San Francisco Board of Education is considering removing a mural of Washington from a local school.

In addition to Washington, the painting also depicts slaves and Native Americans, one of whom appears to be dead. Critics of the mural on the school board call it offensive and claim it traumatizes students, glorifies slavery, genocide, colonization, manifest destiny, white supremacy, and oppression. According to historians, the original intent of the mural was the exact opposite.

Artist Victor Arnautoff painted the mural in 1936. He wanted to depict Washington in a less glamorous way and sought to include images of disturbing realities of the era.
