Is it really on the rise?
Dr. Ricardo Badillo, Gastroenterologist with Memorial Herrmann in Houston says, “No, but maybe people are just talking about it more. I think people see the advertisements for the acid reflux drugs on television and in magazines and online, and it brings the subject to light – and then you get to hear their complaints!”
It seems that more men have it than women. Is it different for men than women?
Dr. Badillo says, “I think with men there is a higher risk of having more of the really complex diseases that go along with acid reflux --- like esophageal cancer or a pre-curser to cancer.”
What exactly is acid reflux?
“It’s a condition where stomach content of acidic gastric fluid flows backward into the esophagus, resulting in heartburn and pain, Dr. Badillo explains.“Symptoms include a burning pain that moves from your stomach to your abdomen, chest, or throat. Or a sour or bitter-tasting acid backing up into your throat or mouth. If your symptoms are bad, seek medical attention and adhere to some lifestyle changes.”
