US pedestrian deaths expected to reach highest number since 1990
Pedestrian deaths are expected to reach their highest level since 1990 as of last year, a new study released Thursday finds. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), 6,227 pedestrian deaths occurred in 2018 — up from 4,109 in 2009 and an increase of 4 percent from the 5,977 in 2017. The GHSA received preliminary data from State Highway Safety Offices in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The data are based on the first six months of 2018 — and the GHSA created its projections based on anticipated underreporting and historic trends of pedestrian fatalities in the first and second halves of the year.
