More Americans falling for online dating scams

It might not be the most heartwarming of Valentine’s Day stories, but ‘romance scams’ through online dating are a thing and more Americans are falling for them.

The Federal Trade Commission says Americans lost $143 million to scammers that they met through online dating services. Houston relationship expert Dr. Viviana tells KTRH she has seen this happen to her clients at Houston Relationship Therapy.

“My clients are coming in really emotionally distraught, and some are traumatized by these experiences,” she explained.

The FTC says the average victim loses $2,600 in these scams. Dr. Viviana says you should be aware of anyone that you just got into a relationship with online asking you for large amounts of money.

“Most people in long term relationships would not hand over or even ask for thousands of dollars early on,” Dr. Viviana stated.
