Texas Rep Wants Names, Photos On Lone Star Cards To Cut Food Stamp Fraud

Southeast Texas state District 21 Representative Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont) filed House Bill 1250 that would require names and photos on Lone Star cards.

The bill seeks to require the Texas Health and Human Service Commission to approve the requirement as a measure to cut "food stamp fraud" where card holders sell their Lone Star cards and pin numbers for fast cash.

The new legislation would also require monitoring how often folks apply for new Lone Star cards as another measure to cut fraud.

In 2016, fraud cases added up to $17 million in 154 Texas counties.
