(Los Angeles, CA) -- The girlfriend of the late actor River Phoenix is breaking her silence about the teen idol's death 25 years ago.
Phoenix was a rising star when he died of a drug overdose outside a Los Angeles night club in 1993. Actress Samantha Mathis was his girlfriend at the time and was with him when he died. She says she hasn't spoken about his death except with her therapist.
In an interview with The Guardian, Mathis says River and his siblings, including actor Joaquin Phoenix, were just stopping by the Viper Room in West Hollywood, but then River decided to play with some musicians and 45 minutes later he was dead. Mathis says he was pushed out of a side door by a bouncer after getting in a scuffle in the bathroom, and then fell to the pavement in convulsions. Phoenix died from an overdose of cocaine and heroin at the age of 23.
