He's campaigning at the 'Texas everyman', but Democratic Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke is living in a different income bracket.
According to the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics, O'Rourke had a net worth in 2015 of about nine-million dollars. That's more than double the worth of incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz, whose net worth was estimated at $3.8-million.
O'Rourke's fortune ranks him 51st among the 435 members of the House of Representatives where he has served since 2012.. The El Paso lawmaker married into the family of one of the city's most prominent real estate interests.
Cruz' worth ranks him 41st in the Senate, where he is completing his first term. He's the son of a Cuban refugee who escaped the communist island with 100-dollars sewn into his underwear. Cruz also married well; his wife is a managing director of Goldman Sachs' Houston office.
Each campaign has managed to raise about 23-million dollars in what has turned into one of the nation's most-closely watched political races.
