New York City has passed a law allowing birth certificates to carry a non-gendered option.
Beginning next year, people who prefer not to be identified as male or female can choose 'X' on official city documents.
NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio signed the bill into law on Wednesday, saying "New Yorkers should be free to tell their government who they are, not the other way around".
