Ex-cop sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing teen

Former Balch Springs police officer Roy Oliver has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the April 2017 murder of an unarmed black teenager.

Oliver, who with his partner had responded to reports of underage drinking in the Dallas suburb, fired his weapon five times at a moving vehicle. Jordan Edwards, 15, in the front passenger seat was hit in the head and killed.

Oliver claimed he believed the vehicle was moving toward his partner, endangering him.

Dallas County jurors deliberated for more than 12 hours over two days before convicting Oliver, then took five hours to decide the sentence, which also includes a $10,000 fine.

Oliver's lawyers say he would be eligible for parole in 7 1/2 years. They also say they will appeal the sentence.

Edwards' father has also reportedly filed a civil lawsuit in connection with the shooting.
