An Illinois law enforcement officer who stood idly by while a man harassed a woman over her shirt with a Puerto Rican flag has resigned.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. Mia Izirarry rented a park pavilion last month to celebrate a birthday.
She repeatedly asked Cook County Forest Preserves Officer Patrick Connor for help as she was berated by an elderly man who continuously criticized the woman for being "un-American."
62-year old Timothy Trybus was arrested for assault, and charges could be upgraded to a hate crime. Officer Connor was placed on desk duty after the video surfaced.
Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States and people who are from there are US citizens.
