Texas Icon Turns 85

Happy Birthday to the Red Headed Stranger.  Willie Nelson was born in Abbott, Texas on this date in 1933.

He made his first recording (No Place for Me) in 1956, and had his first Top 10 hit in 1961 (Willingly).

In the late 1960's he became one of the faces of so-called "outlaw country" - along with fellow artists like Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings - which rejected the more conservative recording restrictions in Nashville.  He has also won 15 Grammy Awards during his storied career.

Nelson's life is not just defined by music.  He's acted in over 30 films and co-authored several books.   He's also an activist for biofuels and the legalization of marijuana.  Fellow artists have sometimes joked about his activism.

The legendary country music star is celebrating by releasing yet another album "Last Man Standing".  It's entirely new material, and Nelson co-wrote all 11 tracks.
