Update: Why did 10 Lawmakers Vote No On Bestiality Ban?

Folks, we have an update to a very important news story. Many of you probably lost sleep last night over this news story, and now we're proud to announce we have an explanation to a pressing question...

Why did 10 Louisiana Senators vote "No" on banning the act of sex with animals?

Well, now we have an answer!

Yesterday, after we learned about this bizarre news story, we sent out an email to all 10 Senators who voted no on the policy.

We had to know - why would you not want to ban donkey-banging? Are you cool with donkey bangers?

Of all the State Senators we emailed, only one emailed us back. Louisiana State Senator R. L. Bret Allain, II, a conservative Republican (most of the lawmakers who voted no against this measure were actually Republicans).

Senator Allain gave us a pretty straight forward answer - he's against bestiality and he thinks it should be illegal, but this was a very poorly drafted bill, according to Allain.

He says the bill, in it's current form, proposes a 10-year punishment for first-time offenders (which is the same punishment the state gives for 3rd degree rape of a human being).

Senator Allain says, since the kind of people who have sex with animals generally tend to be people who suffer from severe mental health problems and intellectual disabilities, it's 10 years is just too long to send them to prison for a first time offense.

Since Louisiana has some of the highest incarceration rates in the country, it doesn't make sense to create a law that will put more mentally retarded people in prison.

Senator Allain has proposed these people get a less severe punishment and spend time in counseling or mental health institutions instead of prison.

Mental health experts (who generally tend to be leftists) actually agree with Senator Allain on this issue.

Interestingly enough, animal rights activists (who also tend to be leftists) think the punishment should actually be harsher.

Considering that people on the Left have taken two extreme positions on this single issue, the Republicans who voted no against the bill actually represent a more moderate position than where the Democrats appear to be standing.

Senator Allain also said most of the people who voted no on this measure have a similar reason to his position for the no-vote.

Considering his logic, I find his answer to be reasonable. I mean, it's certainly a much more reasonable position than voting no because he's okay with donkey-bangers.

All that being said, I'm still not sure where I stand on this issue. Don't get me wrong - any reasonable person should agree sex with animals is a disgusting crime against nature and should be illegal.

But what's the best punishment for the act? Is 10-years too much?

If Senator Allain is correct, and most of the people who commit this crime are mentally retarded (which is not the word he used, but we know what he meant), is it wrong to send them to prison for a decade after their first offense?

I honestly don't know the answer to this question. I know, I know, you're looking for a witty wrap-up and punchy conclusion to this whole story, but I don't have one to offer you.

I've never spent much time considering the best punishment for donkey-banging. It's not an issue for which I've invested a lot of deep thoughts. Have you? What do y'all think? What's the right punishment for convicted donkey bangers?
