Over 1,000 People Face Charges For Sharing Child Sex Video On Facebook

In an unprecedented move, police in Denmark have charged 1,004 young people with redistributing child pornography after they allegedly shared videos of two 15-year-old children engaging in sex acts on Facebook Messenger. According to Bloomberg, Danish police began their investigation last year after U.S. authorities alerted them about the illicit videos.

Facebook noticed that photos and videos of the two underage children were being shared among users of Facebook Messenger last year and alerted U.S. law enforcement. The social media company worked quickly to remove the photos and videos from their platform. U.S. authorities investigated and shared their information with Europol and Danish police.

Following the investigation, Danish police discovered that 1,004 people had shared the video online, with the perpetrators ranging in age from 15 to their early 20's. Most of the people allegedly shared the video a couple of times, but some people shared the videos hundreds times.

NBC News reports that police notified the alleged offenders via email, and contacted parents of those who were under 18.

Prosecutors say they will treat each case separately, and if convicted their names would be "added to child protection registers for 10 years," which can hurt their chances to gain future employment.

Police Superintendent Flemming Kjaerside of the National Cyber Crime Center told a Danish TV station their actions "may be a prank, but it can have adult consequences."

It's catastrophic for them and it can ruin their lives. The young people who shared this video may also be risking something quite ugly for their future … it may be a prank, but it can have adult consequences, since you can be convicted for distributing child pornography.
