Abbott, Pence tour Harvey damage; Governor sets Day of Prayer

Gov. Greg Abbott, visiting Rockport today with Vice President Mike Pence and the Rev. Franklin Graham, proclaimed Sept. 3 as a Day of Prayer in Texas. Residents of Rockport were among the first in the U.S. hit by Hurricane Harvey. The small coastal city has a population of around 10,000 people, and some structures there were leveled entirely.

Speaking outside First Baptist Church, where a side of the building was blown out by the storm, Abbott urged Texans of all faiths and religious traditions and backgrounds to offer prayers on that day for the safety of first responders, public safety officers, and military personnel, and for the healing of individuals, rebuilding of communities and the restoration of the region.

Pence, before meeting with victims, said the nation has been inspired by the resilience of Texans dealing with the storm damage.

Abbott and Pence were joined on the tour by Energy Secretary Rick Perry and other Cabinet members.
