8 Shot Dead; 'Suicide By Cop Was My Intention'

Eight are dead in Lincoln County, Miss., after Saturday night shootings at a series of homes. A suspect is in custody -- and confessed in an extraordinary interview with a newspaper.

A sheriff's deputy was among the victims in the Memorial Day weekend horror.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says the shootings were at three rural residences.

“I'm sorry,” suspect Cory Godbolt told the Jaskson Clarion-Ledger in a videotaped interview shortly after his arrest. “My intentions was to have God kill me. I ran out of bullets. Suicide by cop was my intention.”

The deputy who died did not live at one of the houses, but was responding to the scene.

In a statement, Gov. Phil Bryant asked the issued a statement asking state residents to pray for the victims. He also noted the “sacrifice” made by law enforcement officers to protect and serve their communities.

“Every day, the men and women who wear the badge make some measure of sacrifice to protect and serve their communities. Too often, we lose one of our finest. I thank the law enforcement agencies involved for their hard work,” Bryant said.
