You have plenty of company on the roads this weekend

It’s Memorial Day weekend, the first big travel time of the year -- and plenty of you will be taking advantage of it.

Doug Shupe of AAA Texas says the number of people traveling 50 miles or more this weekend is 2.6% higher than last year and the highest Memorial Day travel volume since 2005.

In fact, “3.2 million people in Texas will be traveling 50 miles or more away from home this weekend,” Shupe said.

It won't be just on the roads. It'll be in the skies, too.

“We are anticipating 234,000 Texans will be flying this weekend. That is up 5 percent from last year,” Shupe said.

Gas prices have not gone up as much as they normally do at this time of year. That’s putting more money in your pockets, and giving you the flexibility to travel. Patrick DeHaan at Gas Buddy says that's having an overall impact on summer travel, too.

“Eighty-two percent of Americans will be taking a road trip this summer. That’s up 7% from last year,” DeHaan said.
