Officer Munoz Released from Hospital, Cortez in Good Spirits

One of two Houston police officers shot while investigating a home burglary has been released from the hospital.

The wife of Officer Jose Munoz's on Wednesday described how grateful the family is.

“You know it might happen, but you never expect it, but we're in good hands,” said Jazmin Munoz.

However, Chief Art Acevedo says the second officer still has a long road to recovery, but remains in good spirits.

“Office Ronny Cortez, I don't know how to describe that guy,” the chief said.  “He's been shot multiple times, here's a guy that's talking with such a good spirit, just really lifting up everyone around him.”

Cortez's brother says despite a bullet lodged near his brother's spine, he continues to joke and smile.

“He's preparing for the worst, but we're hoping for the best,” he said.  “His first words to me were well at least I get to build up my upper body now.”

One of the suspects was shot and killed while the other remains on the loose.  A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to his capture.

Donations for the families of Officers Jose Munoz and Ronny Cortez can be made through the non-profit Assist the Officer.
