More Families Likely to Homeschool After Pandemic Ends

More parents with school-age kids are considering homeschooling even after the coronavirus crisis subsides.

A RealClear Opinion Research poll finds 40 percent of families are more likely to homeschool their children or engage in virtual learning in the future. Educators across the country say with 55 million students no longer in the classroom, families are considering all options. Education expert Erin Valdez with the Texas Public Policy Foundation says homeschooling for the long-term is different than what many are doing right now.

“What we are going through right now really isn’t what I would call true homeschooling. Some people have used the term ‘crisis schooling’. They’re quickly having to adapt, they haven’t had time to assess curriculums,” Valdez said.

Valdez and other policy advocates urge lawmakers to take note of the strong desire for more educational options and school choice. She advises parents wanting to learn more about how to homeschool their kids to check out the Texas Home School Coalition.
