(Middletown, RI) -- The sailor kissing a nurse to celebrate the end of World War Two in an iconic photo has died. The Providence Journal reports George Mendonsa died yesterday in Middletown, Rhode Island. The shot of Mendonsa kissing Greta Zimmer Friedman in New York City's Times Square was taken in August of 1945, after it was announced that Japan had surrendered. She died in 2016. Funeral arrangement for Mendonsa are pending.
