This one flew under my radar.   NASA’s flying saucer.   Thought I had warped into “Coast to Coast” when we told you about it on “Houston’s Morning News.”

But it’s all about getting to Mars and the need for larger and heavier spacecraft to do it.Concept of a Low Density Supersonic Decelerator

It’s also about being able to slow down a heavier craft upon landing. …on Mars and for our robot-nauts…in the ocean on return trips.

These initial tests are out of Hawaii….where the craft will be carried aloft by a gigantic helium balloon and released at altitude to fire up its engines to slide across the stratosphere at Mach 4….then braking into descent into the Pacific.

It’s called the Low Density Supersonic Decelerator LDSD. Couldn’t they find a snazzier name for a flying saucer?
