EPA Conducting Flyover Inspections In The Permian Basin

Federal regulators will soon be flying over oil and gas sites in the Permian Basin.

The EPA wants more data on the air quality in West Texas and southeast New Mexico. The agency is using helicopters equipped with infrared cameras to check emission levels, specifically methane. Journalist Brad Johnson, with The Texan, says oil and gas operators in the Permian basin have made strides in reducing emissions over the last decade.

“The amount of gas flared per barrel of oil produced is down substantially,” Johnson said. “America is already 20% below its 2005 emission standards.”

He adds that methane regulation has been ramped up under the Biden administration. The region accounts for 40% of the nation's oil supply.
