Oakland A's Baseball Player Becomes First MLB Protester

Major League Baseball just had its first protester.

Oakland A's catcher Bruce Maxwell kneeled while the national anthem played before his team's game Saturday night. He is the first player in the major league to do so.

Shortly after Maxwell kneeled, the A's released a statement supporting him, saying the team has always supported a player's constitutional rights and freedom of expression.

“The Oakland A’s pride ourselves on being inclusive. We respect and support all of our players’ constitutional rights and freedom of expression,” the statement read in a tweet.

Earlier Saturday, Maxwell had taken to Instagram and Twitter to denounce the president's comments he made at a rally Friday night. During a rally for Alabama Republican Senate candidate Luther Strange, Trump said NFL players who kneel during the national anthem in protest should be fired.
