The scandal over the level of health care offered by the Veterans Administration broke in Phoenix, but there are allegations of similar problems in Texas.  One whistleblower has been quoted as saying this state's VA is run "like a crime syndicate."  Wait times of months may have been covered up.  Retired Navy Commander Jeff Hensley says it seems to be a widespread problem for the VA.

“The wait times up here in Alice at the VA I use are long,” Hensley says, “and the people up there are working long hours and are expected to do a lot.”

A report from the VA Inspector General cites systemic problems leading to some veterans dying while they wait to see a doctor -- and not only in Arizona.  Several additional investigations are ongoing now.

“This appears to be an institutionalized problem,” he says, “one that's based on decisions that were made at a very, very high level.”
