It’s a day that Houston Texans fans have been waiting for since January, when the 2012 season ended with a loss to the Patriots in the playoffs.
It’s the first day of training camp. It’s time for a new beginning. It’s time to play football again.
“I’m tired of sitting at home,” Andre Johnson of the Texans said on Thursday. There’s nothing to watch on TV. It’s time to get back to work.”
Quarterback Matt Schaub said, “It’s a new year. It’s a new team. It’s time to go to training camp and put our team together.”
The Texans will look a little different than they did last year. They lost stars like linebacker Connor Barwin (signed with Philadelphia as a free agent) and safety Glover Quin (Detroit), but they picked up future Hall of Famer Ed Reed as a free agent (Baltimore). Reed won’t participate at the beginning of camp because of a hip problem, but former Texan Chester likes the signing anyway.
“Whenever he’s been on the field he’s played well. He’s been banged up. He’s had some injuries. What it comes down to is how well he recovers from the hip injury. As long as he’s healthy I believe he’s going to be a very productive player,” Pitts explained
Pitts told KTRH there is only one goal for this club.
“They have the same expectations as every other team in the league. That’s to win the championship. You train, you work, you do everything you’re supposed to do in order to give yourself the opportunity to win that championship,” Pitts, now an anchor with our television partner, Local 2, said.
Former Texan N.D. Kalu, host of ‘In the Trenches’ on KTRH sister station Sports Talk 790 agrees with Pitts when it comes to the high expectations.
“In the locker room, it’s Super Bowl or bust. If you don’t make it to the Super Bowl you lost in the playoffs. You’re not sitting there patting yourself on the back,” Kalu explained.
It's been a quiet off-season for the Texans, unlike what has happened in New England with the Aaron Hernandez murder case. Kalu likes that.
“It’s a good thing when you consider that Denver Broncos executives are getting busted for DUI and the horrific story that’s coming out of New England,” Kalu, a star as a college player at Rice University in Houston, said.
The first workout is at 8 o'clock this morning. But Reed and Arian Foster won't be on the field because of injuries. They have been played on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list.
