Some would-be robbers bit off more than they could chew when they tried to rob a convenience store on the south side.

Three men jumped out of an SUV at a Fuel Depot of South Wayside near I-45, and tried to rob a clerk who had just returned from the bank.  But, what they didn't count on was semi-pro MMA fighter Mayura Dissanyake coming to the rescue.

Dissanyake was the clerk inside, when he saw his co-worker get attacked.  That is when he sprung into action, causing the men to flee.  But, Dissanyake was able to knock down one of he men as they ran, holding him until police arrived.

Police arrested 33-year-old Odell Mathis and say Mathis could be responsible for other similar robberies.
