As the crisis at the Texas-Mexico border continues, some people are beginning to wonder how other countries would deal with it if they had a similar situation. They might be surprised to learn what those other countries do.

Other countries have much tougher policies than the U.S. does. In Europe illegal immigrant children are subjected to intimidation, prolonged detention, and are not given legal representation. In Mexico illegal immigrants could be jailed for two years just for entering the country illegally. Immigration analyst Ruben Navarrette of The Daily Beast told KTRH Mexico has no guarantees their illegals will make it to the U.S.

“If these kids can’t get all the way to the United States they become Mexico’s problem,” Navarrette said. “The American standard is going to be higher. Our standards as a whole are higher with the way we treat prisoners, even foreign born prisoners.

Which is one reason why we treat them better than other countries do. In fact, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told MSNBC we should handle them with care.

"I reference the conference of bishops statement in which they say baby Jesus was a refugee from violence. Let us not turn away these children and send them back into a burning building. That's the bishops, so we have to do this in a way that honors our values but also protects our border and does so in a way that the American people understand more clearly."

It's a comparison Navarrette isn't totally on board with.

“I wouldn’t have used the Baby Jesus analogy but the burning building comparison is apt,” Navarrette said.

But he thinks Pelosi should not have been the one to make the comparison.

“It’s really sickening to hear Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and President Obama talk about this humanitarian crisis because when they had a chance to do something about it, they didn’t,” Navarrette explained.

Navarrette is referring to the first couple of years of the Obama presidency, when Democrats controlled the House and Senate before losing the majority in the House in the 2010 mid-term elections.

He says Pelosi went too far because when the Democrats were in charge, they did nothing to fix the immigration system.
