Many American workers are staying on the job well into their 60s, with some working past 70 - and, companies are glad they are.

One high-level recruiter says when you factor out those who have retired, the unemployment rate among workers in their 50s and 60s is 4-pt-7 percent, much better than the national average of six-point-seven percent.

Labor expert John Challenger of Challenger, Gray and Christmas, says companies are actually looking for those people.

“Companies value, want to hire older workers because they bring experience, more stability,” Challenger says.  “They want them in their company environment.”

Challenger says people at and beyond retirement often don’t want to just sit around.

“There are many people into their late-50s, 60s and even early 70s, who continue to work,” he says.  “They know that just sitting around is not what they want.”
