A Houston police officer survives a shootout while trying to detain a suspect, and then returns fire killing the man.

Officer John Calhoun and his partner responded to a call Wednesday afternoon of a man waving a weapon near Aldine Bender and Airport.

Gunfire broke out as police tried to subdue the man.

Chief Charles McClelland says Calhoun didn't even know he had been shot.

"His life was saved by his ballistic Kevlar, the bullet struck him in the left side," the chief said.

Because of the vest, McClelland says the bullet never penetrated Calhoun.  At last check, the 28-year-old officer was alert and talking with investigators.

The unidentified suspect was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"Today is just an example of how dangerous it is for the men and women of the Houston Police Department to keep this city safe, and the dangers they encounter on a daily basis," says McClelland.
