Could this be a case of President Obama retaliating against a staunch critic?
Conservative documentarian Dinesh D'Souza has been charged with campaign finance violations. D'Souza created the popular documentary "2016: Obama's America" which severely bashed President Obama and claimed Obama is trying to destroy the U.S.
The federal charges stem from campaign contributions to Wendy Long. She unsuccessfully ran for Hillary Clinton's New York Senate seat in 2012. Those charges carry a possible penalty up to two years in federal prison.
D'Souza is also charges with lying to the Federal Elections Commission, a charge that could land him another five years in prison.
The timing of the charges is interesting as D'Souza has a follow-up documentary "America" that is scheduled to hit theaters in July. The producers of the film say the movie will be released on schedule no matter what happens in the case against D'Souza.
