A new study says that the number of children being medicated for ADHD or autism has skyrocketed 500% in recent years.
The study was published in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology. It looked at over 850,000 children born between 1990 and 2001. What they found was that of the number of kids diagnosed with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, 61% of them were being medicated.
Dr. Wendy Rice with Rice Psychology Group says the higher numbers of dignosed children is the result of better educated doctors, but are also due to misdiagnosis, "More doctors are certainly aware of what autism spectrum disorders are, and so they are making more diagnosis and there is more of a push towards early intervention."
Dr. Rice says a lot of ADHD symptoms can be caused by anxiety or can be due to a learning disability.
The study that was conducted in Denmark found that since 2003, the number of kids being medicated for autism spectrum disorders increased five-fold.
