The Houston Zoo has a new resident after an elephant gave birth.
Houston Zoo officials say 23-year-old Asian elephant Shanti gave birth to a healthy, bouncing, 385-pound boy early Friday morning. The zoo keepers have named the calf, Duncan.
This is Shanti's fourth calf. The zoo had been in preparation for the birth for months, since elephants are pregnant for 23 months, almost two years.
The viewing windows for the mother and son will be closed possibly through next week as the elephant team makes sure the two are well bonded and the calf is adjusting to his new home.
