We told you last week the cost of dealing with illegal immigration is going to have an impact on your wallet. Now it looks like the cost will be even higher than some think.

Attorney General Greg Abbott has put the number at $50M. But Lone Star College economics professor Hank Lewis says it could be much higher.

“If you are just talking about transportation it could be $100M. If you throw in housing and other services it could be as much as a $500M,” Lewis said.

And we’re not even talking about the reports that Washington is spending millions of dollars on chartered planes to transport illegal immigrants around the country. Woodlands Congressman Kevin Brady says Washington is making the conscious decision to drive up the costs by not sending them home and enforcing laws that have been on the books for years.

“The White House has ignored that option. They’ve endorsed backdoor amnesty,” Brady stated.

So the cost is going to go up. The deficit is going to continue to rise. And Lewis says the more money that gets spent by the government; the more they will try to get that money back from you.

“It could add another $3B to the national debt. And when the government sells bonds and gets into debt, you’ll pay higher taxes later on,” Lewis stated.

So what could the long-term impact of all of this be?

“That depends on how many will actually become productive members of society and earn income versus how many will try to take advantage of social services paid for by the taxpayer,” Lewis said.
