Houstonians are getting set for the Memorial Day weekend. While travel is down across the country, it's actually up in Texas. And if you're going to the airports Darien Ward of the Houston Airport System says give yourself plenty of extra time.

“Give yourself an extra 30 minutes to find parking and get inline and go through security,” Ward said.

Ward tells KTRH another way to avoid frustration at the airport is to use the internet.

“If you go to our website you can look at the home page you can see the different terminals and the checkpoint wait times,” Ward told KTRH.

The police will be out in force as well, as they normally are with extra checkpoints for impaired drivers on holidays.

“Harris County leads the nation in DWI fatalities so anytime we come across the holidays we like to pick up the patrols,” Texas DPS Trooper Richard Standifer said.

And with many traveling long distances, Standifer says another thing you need to watch out for is drowsy driving.

“When folks are drowsy, they need to pull over to the side of the road, either get something to drink or walk around the vehicle for a while in order to stay awake,” Standifer told KTRH.

And if you're driving, make sure you get the most out of the gas in the car. Experts at Gas Buddy say pack lightly and don't pack anything on the roof of your car.
